The Initial Situation
Making Complex Terminal Operations Understandable
In courses on ports and terminals, capacity planning and operational processes were traditionally taught using mathematical calculations. Many students struggled to fully grasp the interdependencies between efficiency, costs, and environmental requirements. Different levels of prior knowledge and the limited timeframe of the course further restricted learning outcomes.
The Solution
Learning by Simulation with CHESSCON
To bridge this gap, USN integrated AKQUINET’s CHESSCON simulation software into its teaching. With CHESSCON, students can virtually plan, calculate, and optimize container terminal operations. They learn how to model port processes in terms of costs, pricing, KPIs, environmental requirements, and hinterland connections. The 'Port Operations and Logistics' course combines simulations with guest lectures from industry and project assignments, ensuring a direct link between theory and practice.
